historical contextThis Revolution occurred during the late 80's and early 90's in the Baltic States who have been under Soviet control since the end of WWII. These states comprise of Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia and this revolution was ignited with the singing of nationalist, patriotic, and cultural song and dance of these three countries to combat the USSR's communist control. Russian communism restricted western ties and censored mail and phone calls which separated family from distant relatives.

outcomeThe Baltic states were included in a Russian-German treaty dividing control of Eastern Europe. These three states were under Russian control. The Baltic area was lead by masses of citizens working together to sing and protect their country. The main strategy of the revolution was large masses of people attending cultural festivals and defending the country from Soviet rule, such as the protection of TV and radio towers from Russian attacks.

Through a public display of national culture and song, these three countries gained their independence peacefully. Through expressing their culture, they broke away from Russian control and gained control of their motherland.
